University of Connecticut University Scholar Program

The Award The University of Connecticutââ¬â¢s University Scholar Program is one of the most prestigious undergraduate programs at UConn. The Program is available to all undergraduates in the Universityââ¬â¢s schools and colleges. It is designed to give students the opportunity to design and pursue a project or research they are interested in, and to tailor an individualized curriculum for their final three semesters at UConn. University Scholars are awarded the General University Fee for the duration of the program (3 semesters) and are also able to take advantage of additional university benefits. See the full list here. Application Process The University Scholar Program is a 3-semester program, and it is typically done during the last 3 semesters at UConn. Thus, students typically apply the fall of their junior year. Students who are interested in applying should brainstorm the general area of study they wish to pursue during the course of the program, and speak with faculty members to help plan their proposal and for advice. Students are highly recommended to read past successful proposals before putting together their own. The application requires a letter of intent, project proposal and a plan of study. This theory held that if one small nation fell to Communism, then so would its neighbors. The theory was a linchpin of high-level government discussions as early as 1954, when Secretary of State John Foster Dulles used it in a press conference on May 11 of that year. It was still apparently thought to be a cogent argument when President John F. Kennedy spoke about Cuba to the American Society of Newspaper Editors on April 20, 1061. The theory lent support to the arguments, therefore, of both Republicans and Democrats. There is, moreover, some reason to believe that the theory is in fact a somewhat adequate explanation of events; its obverseturning Communist states into states with representative governments, happened all over eastern Europe In terms of Southeast Asia, however, the possibility of governments falling like dominoes was sufficient excuse for U.S intervention. In his May 11, 1954 press conference, Secretary Dulles made clear that while no single one of the at-risk nationsVietnam, Laos or Cambodiacould alone initiate the fall of Southeast Asia, neither was the U.S. going to walk away from the region (Lewy, 1978, p. 163) to test the theory. A Study Of Symphony No. 5 In C Minor Op. 67 Of Ludwig Van Beethoven's In Classical Musical Genre Ludwig van Beethovenââ¬â¢s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor Op. 67 is one of the most well-known and performed compositions in the classical genre. The symphony is used throughout pop culture worldwide and is often played at inaugural concerts for new orchestras. The classic four-note ââ¬Ëfate motifââ¬â¢ is one of the most recognizable openings in the history of music and is featured prominently in a variety of contexts throughout the piece. Although this symphony was not as influential to listeners during the time period as to which Beethoven was alive, the 19th and 20th centuries popularized the piece and has been deemed to be the epitome of Beethovenââ¬â¢s musical style during the height of his musical career among composers, music directors, and musicians alike. The form and instrumentation of this piece are vastly different than pieces prior to the symphony as a performance of this work can range anywhere from 30-40 minutes in length. Not only did this piece further expand the length of the symphony, but the demands placed upon the musicians to which Beethoven composed in the music were so demanding and dense that a performance of this symphony was considered to be quite difficult to achieve in the early 19th century. The first movement is in C minor, is marked Allegro con Brio, and is in a traditional sonata form which was influenced from Beethovenââ¬â¢s teachers and mentors Haydn and Mozart. If one were to examine the score of this movement, one would notice the development section is expanded through the use of several key increasing the section in length and tension before returning to the recapitulation and coda of the movement. The second movement is in Ab major, is marked Andante con Moto, and is in a double variation form. This i s where two differing themes are presented and are played in alternation as they are presented in contrasting styles. A lengthy coda is also presented at the conclusion of this movement. The third movement is a Scherzo and trio, and is in a ternary form. This movement follows the classical tradition of a minuet and trio, but replaces the minuet with the faster, and newer in style Scherzo. There is no pause as the third movement transitions into the triumphant and heroic finale of the fifth symphony. This finale is in C major, the parallel major of the original key of the first movement. Upon hearing this, one could suggest that this minor to major tonality could represent some sort of internal struggle which the fate motif clearly emphasizes. The finale displays the conquering of this struggle as the movement ends in a brilliant fashion of stating the tonic resolution for the last eighty measures of the symphony. The instrumentation consists of piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two cl arinets in Bb and C, two bassoons, contrabassoon, two horns in Eb and C, two trumpets, alto, tenor, and bass trombone, timpani in G and C, and strings. However, the piccolo, contrabassoon, and the three trombones are only used for the fourth movement signifying another new trend as most pieces did not feature these instruments during the time period. What makes the fifth symphony different from the third of Beethoven is that the third symphony was increasingly popular throughout Beethovenââ¬â¢s lifetime. The fifth achieved the fame it has today until later into the 19th century. However, although the third symphony is referenced as the ââ¬ËHeroic Symphony,ââ¬â¢ some scholars of Beethovenââ¬â¢s works suggest that the fifth symphony is more heroic in style and form than the third as once again there seems to be some type of overarching representation of a battle or struggle which is endured then overcome with success. With this in mind, the fifth symphony could be more programmatic in thought leading to more emotional output in composition from Beethoven throughout his middle/late periods and for the several composers to which this symphony will influence in a further programmatic sense of mind.

How Does Stienbeck Explore the Theme of Lonliness in the Novela of Mice and Men
How does John Steinbeck present the theme of loneliness in ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠? To be lonely means to feel isolated from others as you may have a lack of friends, family or companionship. In ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠, loneliness is a strong theme which is shown by all the characters in one way or another throughout the novel. Even though all the characters in the novel live on the same ranch, they are lonely because of their own personal history and backgrounds, and the only thing that connects them all together is their dreams and aspirations. It can be argued that Curley's wife is the loneliest person in the novel.Curley's wife is portrayed as a very insignificant character. Steinbeck presents this insignificance as she is the only woman on the ranch, and throughout the novel, she is not given a name and only referred to names such as ââ¬Å"Tartâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Trampâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Curley's wifeâ⬠by the other men on the ranch. The name ââ¬Å"Curley's wifeâ⠬ shows she is in possession of her husband only and has no importance to anyone else, making her very isolated. She reveals throughout the novel that she is unhappy in her marriage because Curley seems to care little for her, and is really more interested in talking about himself than anything else.In an attempt to make friends, Curley's wife would often attempt to make conversation with the other men on the ranch, by ââ¬Å"looking for Curleyâ⬠and often asking questions. However, the men on the ranch (particularly Candy) refer to her as a ââ¬Å"tartâ⬠who keeps ââ¬Å"giving the eyeâ⬠, and generally ignore her presence. Further, she stresses her missed ambitions in life; she details twice that she could've been a Hollywood movie star, though the chance was taken from her by her mother, who feared she were too young for show bussiness.This shows that, if she has to become a movie star, she wouldn't have settled for the life she has now, which is miserable and lo nely. Steinbeck presents Curley's wife as a very unfulfilled woman. An almost equally lonely person on the ranch is Crooks ââ¬â the negro stable buck. Crooks is also a very insignificant character as he is the only black person on the ranch. There are four tones in Pinyin and we use the numbers here, i.e., 1, 2, 3, and 4, to depict the four tones. If you want to learn Mandarin (or Pu3 Tong1 Hua4), you have to master the four tones of the language. However, one pinyin usually represents many Chinese characters. For example, han4 can depict the Chinese characters for sweet, drought, brave, Chinese, etc. Thus you have to learn the Chinese characters to master the language. Chineseà is not alphabetic, so the writing is not related to its phonetics. In Chinese, We dont translate the Western alphabet since the letters have no meaning, though we do use the letters in writings, especially in scientific writings. Styles of Chinese Writing There are many styles of Chinese writing. Some of the styles are more ancient than others. In general, there are large differences among the styles, even though some of the styles are quite close. Different styles of Chinese characters are naturally used according to the purposes of the writing, such as Xiaozhuan mainly used for seal carving now. Besides the different styles, there are also two forms of Chinese characters, the simplified and the traditional. The simplified is the standard writing form employed in the mainland of China and the traditional form is mainly used in Taiwan and Hong Kong. There are total 2,235 simplified characters contained in the Simplified Character Table published in 1964 by the Chinese government, so the majority of the Chinese characters are the same in the two forms, though the count of commonly-used Chinese characters is only about 3,500. All the Chinese characters on our site are Kaiti (the standard style) in the simplified form. Japanese Kanji are originally from China, so most of them are the same as their corresponding Chinese characters, but Japanese kanji only contains a small collection of Chinese characters. There are a lot more Chinese characters not included in Japanese Kanji. Kanji are used less and less now in Japan. You dont see a lot of Kanji in a modern Japanese book anymore.
